The Passing of Diesel

The Western Region of British Railways took an individual route in post-war railway development in the UK. Unlike the third rail electrification of the Southern Region or the mixed diesel/electrical of the Midland and Eastern Regions WR stayed resolutely diesel.

As the economy has developed and advantages (superiority) of electric traction has become apparent, coupled with the environmental pressure driving the cleaner transportation agenda routes in the region will be upgraded. This project aims to monitor and record the changes achieved in the level of particulate matter along the railway tracks.

Hardware monitors with accompanying student material has been developed to enable schools and community groups to collect and collate their own data. This data may be combined into a sustainable, national web-based recording system.

We welcome applications from parties interested in joining the scheme.
